KHIR City, abbreviated for Knowledge, Healthcare, Innovation, and Research City, is a project led by the Karnataka government on the outskirts of Bengaluru, near the Kempegowda International Airport. The initiative aims to attract an investment of INR 40,000 crore and create 80,000 jobs in the healthcare, innovation, and research domains. Encompassing 2,000 acres, the project will include universities, research institutions, hospitals, and industries, with the objective of revitalizing the state's economy. Additionally, the project seeks to promote medical tourism, as stated by M B Patil, the minister for large and medium industries and infrastructure development, during the announcement.

The strategic location of the project is well-suited as Karnataka hosts a significant portion of India's biotechnology companies and over 350 medical devices and supplies manufacturers. Priyank Kharge, the Minister for IT & BT and Rural Development & Panchayat Raj of the Government of Karnataka, highlighted that KHIR City will serve as a pioneering hub for knowledge, bringing together healthcare innovators, knowledge experts, and global research centers in a singular location. Kharge emphasized the transformation of Bengaluru from a global call center hub to a center of worldwide research and innovation.

Moreover, the Karnataka government has been actively promoting startups and cutting-edge technologies across all sectors by establishing centers of excellence in collaboration with private institutions, focusing on emerging technologies. These centers drive initiatives in startup ecosystem development, industry collaboration, government engagement, and research and academia. Kharge also emphasized the government's recognition of AI as a crucial driver for advancing the digital economy, attracting investments, and creating job opportunities.

Furthermore, Kharge pointed out that Bengaluru has been recognized as one of the top five cities globally for AI, according to a study by The Harvard Business Review (HBR). He mentioned the establishment of the Center for Internet of Ethical Things in partnership with the World Economic Forum and IIIT Bengaluru, emphasizing the intersection of AI, IoT, and ethics and the commitment to ethical principles.
